Women's Employment Outreach
Valuing Women ~ Working for Change
| Women’s Employment Outreach (WEO) has consistently provided a range of
free services to women who are unemployed, nearing unemployment, on
stress-related leave or looking for a career change.
WEO has been in operation since 1980 and employs a Coordinator and three
Employment Counsellors. Our services
range from individual counselling on job search strategies, skill enhancement
and career decision-making, to workshops on building
self-confidence, computer skills and job search techniques. |
 |
WEO is under the sponsorship and management of the Women’s Employment
and Advocacy Society (WEAS). WEAS is
a not-for-profit organization incorporated under the Societies Act.
The objective of WEAS is to advocate on behalf of women for employment
and support services, to promote gender equality, and to operate from a base of
feminist ethics.
|
|
Funding for Women’s Employment Outreach is provided by Service
Canada. WEO is part of
HRDC’s Employment Assistance Program, which provides employment services to
special needs clients.
|
| Programs and services are available to all women who require
assistance in the areas of career decision-making, skill enhancement, job search
and/or employment maintenance. |
 |
| The target groups for WEO are unemployed women, single mothers,
older workers, and Black women. The
organization has ongoing partnerships with many community agencies for the
purposes of referral or to provide workshops for targeted groups of women,
including the Bayer’s Westwood Family Resource Center, Dartmouth Family
Resource Centre, Veith House and Memory Lane
Family Place. WEO also partners with Halifax Public Libraries to provide
workshops at the Alderney Gate, Keshen Goodman and Sackville Public
Libraries.
|
| Women can contact WEO to receive additional information about our
services or book an appointment with an employment counsellor. At
our
Halifax
office, we
offer employment counselling, workshops, a job board with postings from local
employers, Internet
access, job bank access, computer bookings for word processing, and a resource
library. During the individual counselling
process, a counsellor assesses the client’s skills and identifies short and
long-term career goals. Advocacy and
referrals to agencies may be part of the counselling process.
Follow-up with clients occurs at regular intervals, as required.
Information about various training programs and upgrading is available at
WEO.
|
| WEO accepts job postings from various employers in the Halifax
Regional
Municipality.
Clients who are registered and who have the appropriate qualifications
are referred to these vacancies. |
